New Apple Products!

It’s all over the Internet that the latest upgrades to Apple hardware is the “new iPad” and Apple TV.  Don’t forget the iOS 5.1 update also!

Apple has blown away the market with the iPad, and yes, that’s the computer/tablet market.  Prior to the release was the new name for the iPad, and Apple once again blew away any guesses by just sticking with “iPad”.  They eliminated the numbering system, which had polarized opinions, where most argue that numbers can’t keep going. Every other Apple product (besides the iPhone) doesn’t have a numbering system: iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Apple TV, iTunes, iPod, etc.  We’ll get used to it, from now on it’ll be classified as the year it was released (like iPad 2012 release).

Some new features of the “new iPad” include a Retina display of 2048 x 1536, which is almost insane for a 9.7” screen.

It also records HD video and amazing photos.  iPhoto got an app and Photo Stream has the option to delete photos.  Filled with a new processor helps speed up the new iPad and also has a battery life of 10 hours.  This is already superior to desktop computers 10 years ago!

The new iPad comes with 4G LTE and universal 3G for service on any network, similar to the iPhone 4S features.  Unfortunately, Siri wasn’t released with the new iPad, but there is a Dictation button on the keyboard for typing.  And let’s not forget Airplay, something Apple has been pushing heavily over the past year, and with the new Apple TV and the possibility of a television set.

Apple TV was updated with HDMI support and a flashy new layout that looks sexy on an HD Television.  Check out Mashable’s coverage from today’s event.

What to expect Today

Here’s the lowdown for Today, March 7:

At 10AM PST (1PM EST) Apple will reveal it’s new products.  Rumors have been spreading for weeks, but one thing’s for sure, Apple will release a new iPad (whether it’ll be called iPad 3, iPad 2S, or iPad HD is about the only secret left).  It looks like retina HD display will be included with a dual core processor and Siri, a price increase is also likely.  But, a cheaper version has surfaced in the rumors, indicating a smaller iPad possibly.

A new Apple TV looks more likely since about 90% of Apple Stores are out of stock of the current Apple TV’s and won’t be back in stock until after tomorrow.  Steve Jobs spoke about TV designs in his biography, and a figure from 2006 indicates they’ve been working on it for some time and fighting for the name - but iTV Entertainment CEO is in standing on guard if Apple announces an “iTV”.  But, Isaacson, author of Jobs’ biography, has stated that he left out detailed information about Apple’s plans for televisions.  What seems public now is that the company has been working on a Siri-enabled TV.

What I’ll be waiting for with baited breath is a new iMac, but also keep an eye out for the rest of the Mac line including the Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air.  Intel is releasing it’s new Ivy Bridge chip in the summer and Apple will also release Mountain Lion 10.8 in the summer - making a clearer picture of a new Mac line.  We’ll just wait and see if some are released tomorrow - Apple has always had a special relationship with Intel to have their product months before public release.

And iPhone is probably unlikely, but don’t be shocked if an announcement is made, possibly releasing Siri for earlier iPhones.

Be sure to check Apple.com tomorrow afternoon for the latest!  Also check out my favorite resources: MacRumors.com and Mashable.com

Apple’s new OS releases Summer 2012! Mountain Lion 10.8

Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 will release this summer - Apple announced on their site today.  It’s already available to developers for beta testing and the new iMessages is in public beta testing as well.  This is the next step to Apple merging iOS with OS X.

Some of the highlighted new features announced are iMessages making it’s way to the Mac, which already released with iOS 5 on iPads, iPods and iPhones.  Another integration with iOS is the notifications center on the right, similar design to the iOS notifications.  On top of this is a better synced Games Center, AirPlay, Notes, Notifications, Twitter integration and iCloud docs (which all released on iOS 5 that are now coming to Mac OS X).  Go here for more info and watch the video they’ve posted of the announcement.  The new release replaces Keychain with a more secure Gatekeeper app - and the Chinese version will have all new features (in case you needed to know that).

Intel also mentioned that their Ivy Bridge processors will be delayed until after June, so looks like this may be the possible release of the new Mac lineups - iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and finally the Mac Pro updated.  Some rumors say that these could be released as early as March with the release of the iPad 3 - but we’ll wait a couple more weeks to find out the truth.

Filing Taxes on your iPad - It’s so easy now!

I just finished my taxes the other day and did it completely on my iPad. Intuit’s TurboTax offers a great service (Free for federal 1040EZ, $20 for Basic, $30 for Deluxe, $50 for Premium & $75 for Home & Business, plus $38 per state filing).

Not only can you use the iPad app, but you can also use their online service (which I used last year), and purchase the software at local retail stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc.

Now, H&R Block also has a comparable service, offering the same features and different platforms but with 4 different packages, all the same price and name as TurboTax, but no Home & Business package).  H&R Block also offers in-store options as well.

For me, I chose TurboTax because I use Mint.com for my budgeting (both created by Intuit) - which is a great service that keeps track of your spending and budgets, all your accounts in one location, mobile apps, and advice from financial experts.  Intuit also distributes Quicken - so you’ll be able to transfer all your financial information the easiest possible way.

If anyone has other options, or recommendations, feel free to share them! I want to hear what everyone else is using and what they might find the most useful.
